Squirrels

Play, learn and get outdoors.

Age group: 4-6 years old
Meet: Friday evening 5 – 6pm

Squirrels is The Scout Association’s newest section, with the 15th Romsey group launching our Squirrel Drey in September 2022.

Squirrels meetings typically include a mix of games, crafting, stories, and other activities to work towards awards and badges. There are more than 20 activity badges which Squirrels can earn, as well as the 4 core challenge awards that then lead to the Chief Scout’s Acorn Award, the highest award for Squirrels. Many of our activities are also designed to promote teamwork and foundational skills that will be built upon on transition to older scouting sections.

New joiners are assigned to a “nest” for smaller group activities, where older squirrels are encouraged to help their peers complete tasks.

Just like the older sections, the Squirrels activity programme covers a mix of indoor and outdoor pursuits, with recent excursions including a Gruffalo treasure hunt in the woods, an orienteering challenge, and backwoods cooking.

Squirrels also benefit from opportunities as part of the wider scouting family, such as the annual Hampshire Squirrels fun day, where they have taken part in a range of activities including caving, circus skills, crate stacking, and soft archery and axe throwing.

Squirrel leaders

All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure Scouting is safe and open to all. Some lead the Drey week in and week out. Others visit occasionally to help run a session or drop in to share their skills. No matter how much time you have to spare, find out about volunteering on your own terms.
